Help give back to other children in need during the holidays this year.
Now that we are officially a few weeks into the month of November, many stores and businesses across the country are beginning to roll out their holiday campaigns and start putting up their festive decorations to get shoppers in the mood for the holidays.
However, before we get too caught up in buying the perfect gift for our friends and family, stressing out about cooking the perfect Thanksgiving dinner, or sharing the stories of Santa and his reindeer, it is important to step back and take a look at what really matters during this time of year―how lucky many of us are to have a happy home, family and merry holiday season. These precious gifts are not available to every family and child around the country.
One great way to really kick off the holiday season and give your child a gift that they will never forget is to show them how they can give back this year to others who are less fortunate. Not only is this a great deed that will fill you with richness and joy, but it’s amazing how a little gesture such as volunteering or donating can light up someone else’s life.
Here are just a few simple ways in which you and your entire family can give the gift of charity this holiday season and give back to those less fortunate:
1. Donate Your Old Toys
Each and every year during the holiday seasons, kids get their stockings filled up to the brim with the latest and greatest toys of the year, while their older toys get shoved back into the depths of their closest or toy chests. However, instead of letting old toys collect dust until your child has outgrown them, why not consider donating them to families or children who do not have as many toys? Goodwill and Salvation Army are great places to donate old toys or children’s clothes. You could even look into local places in your town, such as churches or schools, that may be holding toy drives where you can drop of your child’s gently used toys.
2. Send A Gift To A Needy Child
If you are really in the spirit of giving this holiday season, why not create a couple of extra gift packages to send to a child in need? Operation Christmas Child is a great organization that allows you to fill a shoebox full of toys, living essentials, toiletries, photos, etc. and then send it to a child somewhere throughout the world. Through this organization, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have received simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child because of the good will of families donations.
3. Volunteer At A Soup Kitchen
While you and your family may be experiencing a mouth-watering, stomach-filling Thanksgiving holiday this year, there are many people in each and every city who will be getting their holiday dinner from their local soup kitchen. Soup kitchen volunteers aren’t just needed to cook and serve those in need, but they also need people to collect the food, set up the service area, and serve and seat the many people who will be coming in to collect their warm meal. Consider getting the whole family together to spend your Thanksgiving providing a warm meal to someone in need.
